The Sailor as Writer

Journalism has been my profession, and writing a way of experiencing the world, very much has been photography. Both activities require a degree of passion, an understanding of the language and of course craft. Both are like preparing a meal, pulling ingrediates together and assembling them in interesting, often innovative ways that surprise the reader /  viewer, as well as the creator.

This winter I was gathering material for a book on family cruising, and managed to pen off a few articles to the boating magazines in the Caribbean. I also wrote  drafts and sample chapters for the book. I have provided links here to the published stories as well as the drafts, solicing comments from my readers.

Writing About The Creative Process

I sent off a pitch to a West Coast Publisher on my book on Creativity a year ago. He called me back with the following advise. “What you have proposed is a series of 5 books, or a class room text book to accompany a semester-long course. What I want to publish is a single book. Select your most compelling chapter and turn that into a book. Then we’ll talk . . .”

”I’m working on it . .  I’m working on it . . .,” well, I’m thinking about it. Before I could spend any time of the new book proposal, the opportunity to spend a year living on the boat, cruising to and through the Caribbean  came upon us and I could not resist. But, I have already written a great about the artist’s creative process, expanding on the one hour lecture I give every Monday at The Workshops for 30 years. Links to those chapters are here as well.
